Chelsea Lose almost £50M in Financial Year

Chelsea remain confident that they will meet UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations despite a near £50million loss for the last financial year, reports SkySports.

The results for the year ending June 30,
2013, show a record £255.8m turnover - the
fourth successive year it has increased -
despite the club's elimination from the
Champions League at the group stage last
season.

Chelsea enjoyed a 19 per cent rise in commercial income from £67m to £79.6m as they won the Europa League, although a
reduction in income from the success of
winning the previous year's Champions
League contributed to the £49.4m loss.

Despite that, Jose Mourinho's side will satisfy FFP regulations as the two-year
monitoring period includes the £1.4m profit
made in the 2011/12 season.

The Blues also see around £15m knocked off their overall loss in add backs, which
includes infrastructure costs, youth
development costs and charitable donations amongst other outgoings.

That brings Chelsea's losses for the period to approximately £34m, falling under the
FFP threshold of £37.5m.

The FIFA soccer World Cup groups are out. Africa’s big 5 are spread out in 8 tough groups of 4. Cameroon appears in Group A with host nation Brazil, Croatia and Mexico. That sounds like a group of death to me, but I’m tipping Brazil and Mexico to make it to the knock out stage. A toast for me will be to see Samuel Eto’o make another appearance and to see this rugged team try to survive a first round ‘annihilation’.
There are no African countries in Group B. Spain, the Netherlands, Chile and Australia will battle it out in that group. I predict a Spain-Netherlands sail-through even though I would not be surprised to see Chile pull a shocker.
Group C has top ranked African country the Ivory Coast contesting the qualification spots with Colombia, Greece and Japan- a rather tricky group, which to me is open to anyone. My bet though will go for the Ivory Coast and Greece. My toast for that group is certainly Didier Drogba and BBC 2013 African Footballer of the year Yahya Toure. The Ivory Coast has perhaps the most star-studded African side in the Tourney, but they have also been known to let down their guard and lose to much less glamorous sides. That however could change from the drawing board.

Boko Haram sect between Saturday and Sunday killed 12 villagers in two villages of Borno State and escaped without any resistance, several other villagers sustained serious injuries by the Boko Haram fighters.
A Christian pastor on mission work in the villages and another military source in the 7th Division of Nigerian Army, Maiduguri told SaharaReporters in separate telephone interviews.
The sources who don’t want to be mentioned, said, the attacks occurred in Tashan-Alade on Saturday during a wedding ceremony and also on Sunday.

New York City resident Kevin Cook was
mugged at gunpoint in Central Park on
Saturday, but when the thief stole Cook's
phone, he was so upset to find that it was an old flip phone that he gave it back, the New York Post reported.

"Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, 'What the f-k is this?' and gave it back to me," Cook told the paper. He described the phone in question as "like a 3-year-old
generation Windows phone.

" Thieves have rejected all sorts of less
desirable cell phones. Last year, a thief held up two Columbia University students,
making them hand over their cell phones,

Man Sick of Christmas Shopping with Girlfriend Kills Himself in Shopping Mall

it’s not known to be the favourite past time of most men, however I doubt many would actually kill themselves whilst out shopping with their girlfriend, it isn’t that bad is it? Well for one Chinese man he had enough of shopping and instead just going back to the car or home or leaving her to it, he instead threw himself off a balcony.
The situation arose when 38-year-old Tao Hsiao had been accompanying his girlfriend shopping and she decided that after five hours she just had to go into one more shop because there was an offer on. This resulted in a heated argument between the pair, witnessed by a number of shoppers, where Tao was heard to say that she ‘already had enough shoes, more shoes that she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more.’ This resulted in his girlfriend accusing him of ‘being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas.’

During a recent supermarket visit Eugenio Freitas, 49, got a bit saucy round by the sausages. Freitas was caught on CCTV with his hands in his pockets for at least ten minutes after he became extremely horny, and overwhelmed by his “excessive sexual drive,” and began to touch himself in the meat section of the Sainsbury’s.
At the time a female employee saw Freitas but she didn’t realise he was getting his jollies off to a burger. Instead she thought the man was “adjusting himself.” Strangely this isn’t the first sexual incident in a supermarket for Freitas, in 2010 he exposed himself in a supermarket and was put on a sexual offender registry for seven years.
Freitas was arrested after a customer became suspicious and along with other members of staff they thought they best call the police. Prosecutor Marcus Harry said: “The staff member and security officer viewed CCTV of the defendant. He was seen for about 10 minutes with his hands down his trousers and in his pocket with his hands moving around. They formed the view he was performing a sex act.”

Nobel Laureate Soyinka’s Daughter Dies

Iyetade Soyinka, a daughter of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, has died. Ms. Soyinka, who was born June 6, 1965, died at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital where she was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.
The death was disclosed in a statement signed by Jahman Anikulapo, an aide to Mr. Soyinka, one of the world’s foremost dramatists and winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in literature. The statement noted that the late Iyetade Soyinka was a student at the Staff School and Queens School, Ibadan before she studied Medicine at the University of Ibadan.

An Aero Contractors aircraft Boeing 737-500, with Registration No 5N-BLC, landed safely at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, Sunday, after a loss of pressure in one of the tyres.
The aircraft which landed at 10.50 am had a total of 104 passengers and crew members on board.
Nasir El-Rufai, who was aboard the plane, said in a tweet that the pilot and the crew of the plane did “a great job.”
“Upon landing in Lagos, our Aero aircraft lost a tyre. The pilot did a great job of breaking to a halt suitably. My phones flew under seats,” Mr. El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, said via his official handle.

Pastor Bakare Gets Cow As “Christmas Gift” From The Presidency, Says He Doesn’t Need Their Cow

The presiding overseer of the Latter Rain Church and the convener of Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare has lambasted the Presidency for giving him a cow as gift this Christmas.
He told his congregation in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, on Sunday that he did not solicit for the cow which he said was dumped at the office of the Save Nigeria Group, SNG, in Lagos by people from the Presidency.
According to Bakare, “I had a cow from the Presidency. I didn’t ask for it. They dropped it at the Save Nigeria Group office… But is it cow that we need? If you check their books, one cow could have been bought for $5,000. The rest of the money is pocketed! We don’t need cow, we need a country that will move forward!”
He added that “they prevailed on me not to return it. Thanks for the cow, but no thanks! That means no cow for me next year (laughs). But we will have good roads, schools etc! We are the cause of our problems. We feel big when Mr President sends us hampers etc… We go to them for contracts etc… Until we change ourselves, we cannot expect change from those who lead us!”
He said the way things are going, very soon people in power will be giving out elephants as gift during festive periods, saying it was wasteful to give such gifts when the money used in purchasing them could be used to provide hospitals, good roads, schools, etc.
He announced that he was giving out the cow, adding that the problem with Nigeria was that the nation has low men in high places.

Rapper Doe B is dead following a shooting in Alabama. He was 22 years old.
Doe B, real name Glenn Thomas, of Montgomery died after an early morning shooting on Saturday, Dec. 28, local NBC affiliate WSFA reported. Police responded to a call of multiple gunshots at the 900 block of Highland Avenue around 1:30 a.m.
Authorities found Doe B, 21-year-old Kimberle Johnson and six other victims, WSFA reported. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene, while Thomas was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The shooting occurred at a venue called the Centennial Hill Bar and Grill, according to AL.com. It was formerly known as Rose Supper Club, but that establishment lost its liquor license and closed a year ago after a December 2012 shooting left six people injured. Centennial Hill opened earlier this year.

HONG KONG (AP) — Jet Li says he's being treated for an overactive thyroid, but he's determined to fight the condition head-on.
The Chinese action star known for his kung fu skills discussed his diagnosis during the taping of a talent show he's judging in China.
In Tuesday's taping, the 50-year-old Li appeared to have a fuller face and heavier frame.
He said his weight has fluctuated but he's taking it all in stride. Li joked about his weight gain and said "I'm fat, I don't have the time to lose it. It's a fact!"
He explained that exercise is not advised with the medication he's taking. An overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, causes changes in a person's metabolism and heart rate, among other symptoms, but is generally treatable with medications.
Li was diagnosed in 2010. He kept his condition under control with medication, but it came back with a vengeance recently.
He said that he's tackling his illness head-on. "I'm just a regular guy, I'm not Wong Fei Hung, I'm not Huo Yuan Jia (kung fu heroes he portrays on film), I'm not a hero. I'm just like you."

Beyoncé is revealing more details about her surprise self-titled album, particularly the whopping number of songs she recorded for it.

KESHI- No Second Chance for Iheanacho

There will be no second chance for Nigerian Under-17 star, Kelechi Iheanacho in the Super Eagles build-up for the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for South Africa.

According to the Eagles head coach,
Stephen Keshi, the youngster has missed
one week training with the team since he
opted to leave camp to sign for English club,Manchester City.

It is believed that the City deal may have
fallen through leaving the youngster and his
representatives considering other options.

But Keshi explained to supersport.com that
Iheanacho had a bright chance of making
the Super Eagles squad for the CHAN
which kicks off on January 11 after
impressing while in camp.

"Kelechi did really impress us and at the
time he was in camp with us he had started
getting used to our style of play, the players
and officials. In fact he had started
bonding well on and off the pitch with other
players.

Unfortunately when the call came that he
was going abroad to sign a deal for
Manchester City I couldn't have stopped
him since he had the backing of his family.

"Right now he's not part of our plans for the
CHAN because we've gone ahead with our
preparation and team-building without him.
And mind you he has lost one week of
training and that's a big gap to catch up
with," said Keshi said on Friday. Keshi is now ready to soldier on with the players
available in the build-up to the competition
next month.

"There are other players in camp who are
committed and we will have to work with
them and get the best out of them for the
tournament," said the Delta-born coach.

The Federal Government has budgeted N1.52b for the maintenance of the 10 aircraft currently in the Presidential Air Fleet in 2014.

The maintenance cost is slightly higher than the N1.5bn proposed as the initial deposit for the purchase of additional aircraft that will bring the number of aircraft in the fleet to 11.

This is apart from the N747m earmarked for the purchase of aviation fuel for the aircraft already in the fleet.

These figures are contained in the details of
the 2014 Appropriation Bill presented to the
National Assembly by President Goodluck
Jonathan through the Minister of Finance,
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, penultimate
week.

The government has also earmarked
N458.5m for international trainings for the
fleet's personnel in the coming year.

Another chunk of the budget for the fleet is
the N675.9m budgeted for the rehabilitation/renovation/repairs of PAF Barracks.

A whopping N405.5m is also proposed for
the completion of a hangar project under the PAF budget for the year while N106m is earmarked for tyre bay tools and equipment.

The PAF's security vote (including
operations) is N259.55m; insurance premium - N445.7m; as well as cleaning and fumigation services -N58m. N71.74m is budgeted for 797 units of LG 2HP air conditioners for PAF Barracks;
N40.5m is earmarked for three units of
Toyota Coaster buses and N26.4m for four
units of Toyota Hilux.

Motor vehicle fuel will gulp N29.6m, other
transport equipment fuel cost - N26.5m;
plant/generator fuel cost N14.5m as well as
cooking gas/fuel cost - N2m.

The N67m devoted to miscellaneous
included refreshment and meals - N28.9m;
postage and courier services - N15m;
medical expenses - N12m; corps members
kitting, transport and feeding allowance
N3.7m and honorarium and sitting allowance - N3.6m.

PAF is said to have the third largest fleet of
aircraft in the country with a total of 10
aircraft, coming closely behind
Aerocontractors Airlines, which has a total
of 14 aircraft. Arik Air, the largest commercial airline in the country, has a fleet of 23 aircraft.

The PAF include two Falcon 7X jets, two
Falcon 900 jets, Gulfstream 550, one Boeing 737 BBJ (Nigerian Air Force 001 or Eagle One), and Gulfstream IVSP.

Citation 2 aircraft and Hawker Siddley
125-800 jet.

KwanKwaso Spend N1 Billion on College in Niger Republic

Over N1 billion has been spent by the Kano
State government on Kano/Niger Republic
Bilingual College in Niamey, Governor
Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso has said. The
money, Kwankwaso said was expended in
building students' hostel, multipurpose hall, kitchen, staff quarters, clinic and wall
fencing of the college.

Speaking during a farewell ceremony for
the first batch of 101 secondary school
students to Niger Republic, he said the
money was the counterpart fund of the
state for the joint project. The state
government, according to a statement by the governor's media aide, Mallam Halilu
Dantiye, provided a bus, a pick up van, two
sets of uniforms for each of the pioneer 200
students and English teachers.

He added that the Nigerien authorities
provided land for the project, in addition to
running the school. The idea for the
establishment of the college, according to
Governor Kwankwaso, was to consolidate
bilateral relations between the state and the Niger Republic, expose Kano children to
French language as well as create
unlimited opportunities for them in French
and English speaking countries..................

Governor Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole survived a motor accident at Ewu Village along the ever-busy Benin-Auchi road in Edo State at about 9.45am Saturday, 28th December 2013 on his way back to Benin City from his Iyamho Village. The incident occurred at about 9.45am at Ewu, in Edo Central Senatorial District, when a Peugeot J5 Bus filled with tomatoes and plantains apparently lost control and rammed into the Governor’s Flag Car from the opposite direction before swerving into a roadside ditch.
Three vehicles in the Governor’s convoy were in front of the Governor’s Flag Car and had passed the Peugeot J5 Bus before it [J5 Bus] had direct impact with the Governor’s car, which had the Governor, his Aide-De-Camp [ADC] and his Driver as occupants. The Governor’s Car was badly affected but both occupants of the Peugeot J5 Bus and that of the Governor’s sustained no injuries.

The insurgents stormed the barracks in the town of Bama in a convoy of trucks before sunrise, opened fire on the soldiers inside then torched the compound. Several witnesses said the gunmen kidnapped soldiers as well as women and children.
“Our fighters stormed the Bama barracks,” Shekau said, while seated on a mat and flanked by a group of armed men.

Shekau has released a series of videos since taking control of the rebel group more than three years ago. The latest recorded statement was delivered to AFP through the same channel as previous messages.
“This is a victory from Allah,” said the wanted insurgent leader after claiming to have destroyed “21 armoured tanks” and killed “multitudes” in the raid.
The Nigerian military claimed 15 soldiers died in the combat, while it claimed that its men killed 50 terrorists. According to the defence ministry, more than 50 “terrorists” were killed when ground forces backed by fighter jets pursued the fleeing Islamists after the raid.

The Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of the policeman who yesterday in Katsina shot and killed Umar Aliyu of the Hassan Usman Polytechnic.
In a statement signed by spokesman Okoye Robinson Chibuzo, NANS condemned the act in strong terms and called on the National Human Rights Commission to investigate the incident and the killings of other students which now number 30, as a matter of urgency.

Vice President Namadi Sambo is spending a fortune to furnish and upgrade his official residence and guest house, two projects costing N2.1 billion and lingering since his election alongside President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.
In three years leading up to 2013, the government has spent a minimum of N300 million annually to furnish and upgrade the vice president’s residence and guest house, according to past and present federal budgets.
The biggest spending -N900 million- for the upgrade and furnishing was done in 2011.
That year alone, N500 million was channelled into acquiring, upgrading and furnishing the vice president’s guest house at Aguda House, while a separate N400 million was spent on purchasing some more furniture and extending the vice president’s lounge there.
In 2012, the government spent additional N437.1 million for the “upgrading and furnishing” of the same guest house, and squandered additional N112 million solely on “household equipment” for Mr. Sambo’s residence.

Carragher Regretting Retirement after Liverpool Season Form

North Urges Jonathan To Prosecute Obasanjo over Political Killings.

The North has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to bring officials of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration to book over political killings which, according to Jonathan, took place during Obasanjo's presidency.

It also insisted that the next president of
Nigeria, must emerge from the area,
pointing out that President Jonathan must
stand down for their own in 2015.

Interestingly, it was stated by 2 northern
groups, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF,
and the Northern Elders Forum, NEF,
during two separate interviews with
Saturday Vanguard yesterday.

Responding to Obasanjo's letter, alleging
that the President had placed 1000 people
on watch list, Jonathan had in turn placed political killings in the country on the door
steps of the former President .

Jonathan stressed that all the political
killings since the Fourth Republic began,
took place at the time Obasanjo was
President.

According to Jonathan, although political
killings had occurred in the country, none of
them had taken place since he became
President about three years ago.

Among those who were said to have been
politically murdered during Obasanjo's
administration included, the former Minister
of Justice and Attorney-General of the
Federation, Chief Bola Ige, and South-
South politicians, Chief Harry Marshall, Chief A.K. Dikibo, a former Senatorial
Candidate of the defunct All Nigeria
People's Party, ANPP, in Imo State, Uche
Orji, Arc Layi Balogun, former Vice
Chancellor of the University of Nigeria
Nsukka, UNN, Prof Chimere Ikoku, former Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association,
NBA, in Anambra State, Chief Barnabas
Igwe and his wife, Chief Victor Nwankwo
of Fourth Dimension Publishers and Chief
Funso Williams.

It would be recalled that in the letter to
Obasanjo dated December 20, 2013,
Jonathan called the former president's
allegations baseless and having no proof
behind them.

However, reacting to President Jonathan's
allegation on political killings before he
came into office, the National Publicity
Secretary of ACF, Mr Anthony Sani said.

"If you consider the submissions by Mr
President,whose place in the order of things,is to provide order and direction to the nation… I wonder if he needs ACF to ask him to take necessary actions that are within his mandate.

"I have made it clear that what the former
president wrote to his place-holder,
President Jonathan, except perhaps the
issues of training and arming snipers
against political opponents-was common
place knowledge. The same with the issues raised by President Jonathan. Meanwhile,
Prof Abdullahi who spoke in an interview
with Saturday Vanguard noted that the
North had already made its position on the
2015 presidency known to President
Jonathan's emissaries, pointing out that a list of 151 key northern politicians and
leaders was drawn by presidential political
tacticians with a view to wooing them to
work for the president in the next general
elections.

The former ABU Vice Chancellor and
Presidential Adviser on Food Security
admitted to Olusegun Obasanjo, said that
he and some other northern leaders, whose
names appeared on the list, had already
been contacted for possible support to Jonathan ahead of the impending election.

He said however that the presidential team
must have hit the rock, as most of the
northern elements consulted on the need to
work for Jonathan's re-election, politely
turned down the offer.

Abdullahi did not mention the name of any
of those who contacted them and who
politely rejected the offer to work for the
president.
