President Jonathan’s Social Media Aide Reno Omokri Exposed As Author Of Fake Document Linking Ousted CBN Governor To Boko Haram

Reno Omokri, the outspoken Special Assistant on Social Media to President Goodluck Jonathan, was today unmasked as the brain behind a fraudulent attempt to link Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to the recent spike in Boko Haram violence in Borno and Yobe States. In one of the recent attacks, Boko Haram terrorists slaughtered some 60 secondary school students at their boarding house.
Posing as “Wendell Simlin,” Mr. Omokri circulated a Word document linking the former CBN Governor to the recent attacks. The ruse was however uncovered when some Internet-savvy Nigerians traced the IP address of the source document and it turned out that it had been authored and circulated by Mr. Omokri.
This scandal, the latest in a series of ethical and corruption issues rocking the Jonathan administration, set Twitter on fire today. Outraged Nigerians called for Mr. Omokri's sack. The timing of Mr. Omokri's fraudulent act is particularly insensitive, with many commentators questioning why a member of President Jonathan’s inner circle would seek to capitalize on the blood of slaughtered innocent children by forging documents to implicate a perceived "enemy" of the Jonathan administration.

Mike Okiro’s N1bn Libel Suit against NOPRIN: Court Adjourns To March 21

A High Court in Ikeja has set March 21 for the mention of a libel suit filed by a former police Inspector General, Mike Okiro, against the Network of Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN).
Mr. Okiro filed the suit in response to a petition by the group to the Senate advising against his confirmation as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
A report by NOPRIN in 2013 had exposed indictments on Mr. Okiro, and it called on the Senate to turn down his nomination.
In the petition, the group set out four grounds for their objection to the former IGP for the post.
Among them, NOPRIN accused Mr. Okiro of promoting extrajudicial killings in the country.  And stressing the need to keep the PSC “civilian, credible and effective,” they argued that Mr. Okiro would not able to live up to the task.
The network also accused the former police boss of cultivating partisan interests that contravened the provisions of the constitution, and concluded that he carried “clear and irremediable integrity deficits.”
The petition further underlined that the re-nomination of members who had previously served a term negates the provisions of the constitution under the PSC Act.

Nigerian student sentenced to death in Malaysia for drug trafficking

A 28 year old Nigerian student, Prince Bartholowmew Obitube, has been sentenced to death by a high court in Malaysia for trafficking drugs. The Shah Alam High Court yesterday Feb 26th gave the death penalty to Obitube after he was found guilty of trafficking cannabis, also known as marijuana.

Mikel boost for Chelsea against Galatasaray

After two days of worries, Chelsea have received a triple injury boost ahead of their Champions League last 16 clash with Galatasaray on Wednesday with news that Mikel Obi, David Luiz and Oscar are all in Jose Mourinho’s squad  list for the match in Istanbul.

Luiz and Mikel missed Saturday’s 1-0 win against Everton through injury, while Oscar was substituted at halftime because of an ankle complaint. Mikel’s  state is also a major concern for Nigeria as the country prepares to face Mexico in a friendly match next week.

Mourinho was able to call on the trio for the first leg encounter with Roberto Mancini’s Galatasaray as the club revealed that the players have travelled to Istanbul, Goal reports.

The Blues face the Turkish Super League champions in the Turk Telecom Arena but will be without January signings Nemanja Matic and Mohammed Salah, who are both ineligible to play, having featured in the tournament with their former clubs earlier this season.

Chelsea topped their group, pipping Schalke to top spot with a record of four wins and two defeats from six games. Galatasaray, meanwhile, sneaked into the knockout phase, eliminating Juventus by defeating the Italian champions 1-0 in the final group game.

Mancini is counting on former Chelsea forward  Didier Drogba, as well as Wesley Sneijder for the first leg contest.

Champions League: Olympiakos coach warns United

Michel,  who spent 14 years on the books of Real Madrid during his playing days,  says he  is ready  for a first ever clash with United.

He  said,  “At the start of the season I said that winning the league and the cup was a challenge, competing in Europe was a thrill, a hope, something to be enthused by.

“Benfica, Anderlecht, PSG, now United, here and at Old Trafford. I’ve never been. I told the players: ‘This is special’.

 “We have an idea, which is to protect and respect the ball as the best way to defend and attack, and we want to be aggressive.

“People associate aggressiveness with defending. Bravery, too. No, no. Aggressiveness means going for goal, sharing a belief, a hope, that we can compete.

“That’s why we think that, even if it makes us mad, we have a chance against United.”

It could be argued that United’s domestic struggles this season will make them vulnerable, with this an ideal time to be luring them out on the road, and Michel hopes he is piecing together a game plan which will allow Olympiakos to exploit any chinks in the Red Devils’ armour.

He said, “More than seeing weaknesses I imagine them, I get my hopes up with the possibility that they exist.

“We don’t have a laser-sighted weapon to blow away their defence, but we do have our ideas.

TETfund: Ahmed orders probe of colleges of education

The Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, has ordered a probe into the spending of state-owned colleges of education following an alleged mismanagement of the Tertiary Education Trust fund.

The colleges are those at Ilorin, Lafiagi and Oro.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, who spoke to journalists in Ilorin on Monday, said the governor directed the Ministry of Tertiary Education to probe the alleged abuse of funds.

According to  Morounfoye,  the Ministry for Tertiary Education is also to review the schools’ curricula to ensure that they produce well-trained teachers.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor, Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, Prof. Samson Ayanlaja, has called on the Federal Government to extend the TETfund largesse to the private universities in the country.

He made this call in an interview with one of our correspondents.

He noted that the owners of private universities were also contributing to the educational development of the country, and so deserved to get from the fund.

He said, “It has been our plea and cry to the Federal Government to extend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to the private universities. This is because we are also helping to provide education for the teeming youths of the country.

Again, cult killings raise fear on campuses

Death, the Medieval playwright, William Shakespeare, says, “Is a necessary end, will come when it will come”. In other words, death is an inevitable act and comes whenever it wishes. No wonder, some people cloak up to 100 years before they die while others even ‘visit the land of the never return’ as early as they are born.

At whatever stage death comes, it is never palatable for the relatives or well-wishers of the deceased. Accompanying it are sorrow, unhappiness, discontent and despondency. Agreed, it is unavoidable; many hold the view that the death of one at his prime, particularly in a controversial circumstance, is the most painful. It is therefore not surprising that students of the University of Ibadan on Saturday protested the death of one of their colleagues, Taiwo Shittu, who reportedly died in a controversial manner. Her assailant reportedly raped and murdered her.

Before Shittu’s death, there was also the killing of a student of the Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State, 17-year-old Opeyemi Odusanya, in a similar circumstance. Suspected cult members in Lagos on February 3, murdered the 300-level Biochemistry undergraduate for allegedly refusing their sexual advances.
