Alcoholics in Amsterdam given beer to clear litter from streets

A new scheme has been set up in Amsterdam where alcoholics are given beer if they help to clean up the litter off the streets. The organisers claim that the scheme helps to cut down the amount of alcohol the individuals are consuming as well as giving them a sense of purpose.
Each day the individuals get paid €10 (approximately £8), are given a hot meal, ten cigarettes and five cans of beer.
The Rainbow Group Foundation, who runs the government funded scheme employs 20 men, who are spit up into two groups and work three days a week picking up litter. The scheme has proven to be really popular, with a waiting list of alcoholics who want to join the programme
